Idol Factories

Idol Factories Introduction  Human beings are made in God’s image and we were made to worship Him. But in our sin, we rebel and worship other things (money, food, sex) instead of the God Who gave those things to us. Why do we rebel against God and why do we give our lives to pursuing what we want at all costs? Saul, a Type of Me Saul, the first king of Israel, disobeyed God because of his pride and the root of his pride was his idolatry of himself. He thought his way was better than God’s way. It didn't matter that God had given him clear instructions. Saul thought he knew better or at the very least he thought God would understand. Many people today, including Christians, don’t obey God in the simple ways we ought to because, like Saul, we have idolatrous hearts. We worship ourselves. But what most people come to realize is that in the end, like stone idols, our idolatrous hearts are cold, hard, and lifeless. Pleasure and self-fulfillment have their limits. In the final analysis,

Stop Watching Porn

Stop Watching Porn One of the greatest sins with which men struggle today is porn. It's a bribe that many men take and a lie that many men believe. The extent of the impact porn has had upon men and our culture, as a result, is both manifestly obvious and entirely unknowable in our current moment. Porn is a chain of bondage that men place around their own necks day after day and men must take whatever steps are necessary to break that chain. So, men, I have one charge for you today. Stop watching porn.  Solomon's Wisdom Solomon said it best so I will give him the last word. "And now, O sons, listen to me, and be attentive to the words of my mouth. Let not your heart turn aside to her ways; do not stray into her paths, for many a victim has she laid low, and all her slain are a mighty throng. Her house is the way to Sheol, going down to the chambers of death." -Proverbs 7:24-27

God and Politics

4 Biblical Truths about Politics Introduction Christians often shy away from talking about politics. We do this, mistakenly, because we believe that when Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world," he meant that his kingdom has nothing to do with this world, and that couldn't be farther from the truth. Jesus came in the flesh that whoever believes in him will have everlasting life and that the world through Him would be saved (John 3:16-17). Christians have an obligation to speak about politics so long as it is in proportion to how much God speaks about it in His Word.  King Solomon Speaking the Truth I have recently begun the practice of reading a proverb of Solomon each day in my personal devotions. My goal isn't to find a transformative truth every day, but rather to grow in wisdom over time. This morning, I was confronted by several powerful truths about politics and I will share four of them here. I would strongly encourage you to read Proverbs chapter 28 and

On Catechesis

Image
Introduction The historic creeds and confessions are a wonderful part of the heritage of Christianity. These great written works are summaries of Biblical teaching, and how Biblical doctrine should influence our lives. Accompanying several of the historic confessions were catechisms. Catechisms were designed to be an effective question-and-answer style of oral teaching.  They were used to teach children the truths of Christianity beginning from the time they were barely able to speak. Catechisms use repetition, interrogation, and confession to teach Biblical truth. Because of their frequent association with Roman Catholicism, many evangelicals shy away from using a formal catechism to teach their children. What most people don't realize is catechisms are an integral part of our daily lives. Everyone is being catechized all the time. No Whether but Which Um, I’d never heard of a catechism before today and I certainly haven’t read one before, you might say. But oh how wrong you’d be.
